Learning at Orchard

What we do

Children learn best when happy and confident. At Orchard Nursery School, we aim to provide an environment that enables all children to learn to their full potential offering a wide range of activities and experiences. Through using many arts, crafts, physical and imaginative play we aim to aid the children’s learning naturally and without barriers. We have a dedicated and well qualified team of staff to help aid and shape the children’s learning in a fun and exciting ways, ensuring the children have fun and are able to explore a safe and nurturing environment.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, and we plan for the children carefully, considering their individual interests.

The Early Years Foundation Stage

The curriculum has seven main areas of learning and are all vitally important to the development of children and their learning, which are all interlinked.

The Three Prime Areas are:

Communication and Language

Physical Development

The Specific Areas of Development are:

These areas are able to strengthen and build a knowledge and understanding on the already established 3 prime areas of learning and development.

Mathematics

Allows the children to explore using their own methods and experiences while developing their confidence and knowledge with mathematical concepts such as numbers, counting and calculating shape, space and measure.

Literacy

To encourage pre-reading and writing skills, by giving meaning to marks and sharing books, rhymes and songs. We have a wide variety of reading materials and always encourage our children to freely explore the marking making materials.

Understanding the World

Encourages the children to observe, question and understand the environment around them while exploring with a wide range of materials such as ICT equipment and the world we live in.

Expressive Arts and Design

Gives the child a wonderful opportunity to express their ideas and feelings through a wide range of media, creative activities and role-play opportunities to ignite their imaginations.

SEND

At Orchard Nursery School we provide an inclusive environment for all children and families. As a nursery, we are committed to integrating children with special educational needs. Staff are made fully aware of the special needs of the individual children and encourage them to do all the activities on offer. Additional and appropriate help will be offered when needed with regard not to undermine self-confidence and independence.

The EYFS is our starting point for planning that meets the specific needs of all children. We set suitable learning steps and respond to children’s diverse learning needs and always promote their own unique individuality.

We work closely with many outside agencies and are able to obtain further support if necessary from other professionals such us Portage, Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, other specialist programmes and how to access funding, should the need arise.

Orchard Nursery has dedicated staff with a wide range of experience and knowledge to support all the children in our care Annie Barnham-Way is our dedicated SENCO with Jo Lemon being deputy.
